I think I have some questions that might have lots of different opinions. I was talking to ~
kimtheslackerbitch about this:
In terms of body mods, where do you draw the line between beauty, pain and addiction?I'd like to see what people think. I mean there are many people who get tattoos and piercings because they think they're beautiful, and they like the way it makes them look or the personal significance it holds. I've been pierced before and I still can't explain exactly why I did it, except for liking the way it looked or the idea of it. I think tatts are beautiful too and I would love to get some when I have money and can finally decide what I want.
But what about the people who decide to pierce themselves? I know of a few people who choose to do that, and they have lots of piercings - it some what becomes an addiction. I know this is even more true of scarification / cutting, whilst some like the scars and how they look like, sometimes it's for the release or for the high. Sometimes it's both. I think with scarification though is that it's even more stigmatised in society than tattoos or piercings because it's not as common.
So what becomes to an extent, socially acceptable? Paying someone who is qualified to modify your body? Does this mean that if you do it yourself you are sick and have a mental illness? I know there are people out there who cut themselves simply because they find it beautiful, and not necessarily in a pattern / design (for example, a famous example would be Scar
[link]) and have built a career on this extra aspect that makes them stand out from all the other amazing models.
Scientifically pain releases endorphins, which produces a high - how is it any different than drugs? Yet if you have a drug addiction you go to rehab, you blame it on Bad Influences in your life and peer pressure, but if you choose to hurt yourself you have a serious mental problem but you get no help for it whatsoever. (That is to say if you even need help for choosing to hurt yourself in the first place, I'm not saying it's a bad thing.) Maybe that's the thing, that it's easy to say drugs are bad for you, but if you hurt yourself without placing your life in danger it's personal choice and no one can tell you it's Wrong (although trust me, many try to).
I'd love to hear everyone's opinions on this, or personal anecdotes.
In other news I got a new shelf from Ikea and have cleaned my room. Any of my friends who have seen my room know what a remarkable feat this is. Previously you couldn't even tell what colour my carpet was! I don't think my mother has ever been so proud of me.
EDITI just found the best graphic ever.

...you raise some interesting points dear, i LOVE getting pierced, there are times when its tempting to take out my nipple ring just to get it re-done...or just go and get the other one done. I'm a bit of a pain junky in some ways i suppose but i think there is a line between good pain and bad pain. To me good pain has to do with clean injuries (eg piercing) and healing. Thats not to say "good/bad" in the traditional sense though.
Speaking from a psych perspective, often time things which differ from "normal" are considered "unhealthy" and scarification vs cutting is a fine line. Perhaps it has to do with intention? as in why you are doing it and what you hope to achieve
but yes i think piercing etc can be/is addictive, I can deffinatly say that im addicted and its not good...although it could be worse...also, never pierced myself, i dont get into that much of it

Though I think some people do it just because they want to be outrageous. They want to be noticed. But thing is how can you tell the difference between someone whose comfortable with themselves doing it, and those who are out for attention?

If both cutting and scarification give you a certain high then where is the intention? That is to say if it's for the high. One's just a pretty, calculated design whereas the other is not, but both could be considered beautiful to certain people.
Your dad pierces himself, doesn't he? But he took a course or something?

I do think some people do it for the shock value, and to me that's a bit wrong. It's like basing your own ideals on other people's judgements and attention given. It's hard to negotiate who does what until you know people a little better, I just think it's bullshit that people immediately judge you once you are scarred/pierced/tattooed.
Thanks for your comment!

What i meant by clean injuries vs dirty ones was things like people who inflict pain onthemselves without much care or thought into how they are doing it...not dodgy peircers
I think the intention bit is things like, Chasing a high, hurting/punishing yourself, creating a beautiful mark on your skin. I think if you undertake scarification to work through a challenge, mark a point in your life and/or get a pretty pattern on your skin is one thing, the pain is not the focus. If you are cutting/scarring to "feel something", hurt yourself or other, with negative intentions then thats not good.
Yes dad has pierced himself but i dont think he took a course. I dont know about why he does it though and i haven't asked...its his thing
I guess there are probably a couple of different issues with cutting, scarrification, piercing and other pain related activities.
Aside from the whole, social acceptance thing there may be problems with addiction and then why your doing it and what you hope to get out of it. (intentions)
If your cutting with the aim to hurt yourself or because of underlying psych problems then i think thats unhealthy...but its just the same if you use piercing, tattoos or drugs and alcohol.
